Today, Coalición Clima, the largest Spanish platform against climate change [1], has asked for a meeting with President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. The objective is to let him know the proposals made by the civil society facing the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit and the Spanish Presidency of the European Union.

Since climate change is a global problem, it requires that all public powers, the private sector and the civil society work cooperatively. Coalición Clima believes that it is urgent to go from gesture-policies to a specific and brave action that echoes the deep social concern regarding the reasons and consequences of climate change.

As believed by this platform, the following months are a key factor, due to the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit, in December, and the Spanish Presidency of the European Union, from January 2010. According to Coalición Clima, the Spanish Government has the opportunity to materialise the proposals relating climate change that the President made on his investiture. This way, he would support an ambitious global agreement and would place our country in the path of emissions reduction to meet the Kyoto commitments.

Coalición Clima wants to present Mr. Zapatero with a Decalogue of measures to fight climate change with efficiency and equity. The civic platform calls Government to urgently consider limiting global and national emissions, supporting climate change adaptation policies in less favoured countries, a true commitment of a development based on a low carbon use, promoting energy efficiency, as well as a sustainable energy mix, based on austerity, saving and responsible consume criteria, among other proposals.
For all there reasons, Coalición Clima, on behalf of the 30 organisations that comprise it, has requested today to be received in the Moncloa Palace (Palacio de la Moncloa), with the purpose of sending the society and its political leaders a clear message of dialog and shared commitment in the fight against climate change.
