Ecologistas en Acción has asked the Government for the treasure recovery extracted from the sea bed in the south coast of Spain. The American company Odyssey should be the responsible entity of this recovery. Ecologistas en Acción wants to use these treasures to carry out development aid projects among indigenous communities of Latin America, their rightful owners. This environmental organization has also asked the Public Prosecutor Office for the investigation of the conduct of the Spanish authorities in connection with the stolen treasures in the Alboran Sea

Ecologistas en Acción has asked the Public Prosecutor Office for the investigation of the conduct of the Spanish authorities in connection with the treasures extracted by the American Company Odyssey from the sea bed during the last years in the south coast of Spain. The reason of this request is that since 1998 until a few days ago, the Odyssey Company had sailed in the Alboran Sea (off the coast of Malaga). They said they were looking for the English ship Sussex under a British Government order. During that time they did not find the ship Sussex, but they extracted almost 17 tons of old silver and gold coins (more than 500,000), which have different values.

Although they had permission to extract nothing, since two years ago, Zeus Robot which belongs to Odyssey, weights 8 tones and whose task is to pick objects up with his articulated arm, including coins, has been working in the area of the Strait. They need several months, even years to extract a large amount of coins. For all these reasons, it is obvious that among Spanish authorities there have been incompetence and negligence, although these facts were known in the area, both in Gibraltar and in Algeciras. Ecologistas en Acción has also requested the office of the public prosecutor that they must collect the different complaints that have been done about these facts before the competent authorities.

Ecologistas en Acción believes that the Spanish Government must ask the British Government for explanations about its possible participation in this theft, about the possible use of public facilities in Gibraltar in order to hide the treasure and about his possible order to Odyssey in order to look for Sussex and which has been used by the company as a cover for the theft.

Ecologistas en Acción is demanding the Spanish Government to claim 17 tones of stolen gold and silver coins in the American courts and commit in public that once they have recovered them, they have to use these coins to carry out aid projects with Latin America, especially to improve environmental and life conditions of the indigenous communities. It seems reasonable that those gold and silver coins which were extracted from America during the colonization should turn back to their origin and has to be used to improve life conditions of their rightful owners.

Ecologistas en Acción has requested the Ministry of Education that they should use funds for the recovery of the wrecked ships that there are in the Alboran Sea (more than 3,000 ships are estimated to have been sunk), and use the extracted treasures for the same purpose, in order to increase the assistance to the cooperation with Latin America, but not replacing the current one. This assistance will not be a foreign debt of American countries with Spain, but a refund of the historical debt that Spain had with American countries. We would achieve two goals: to avoid private companies to benefit from these coins and to improve life conditions of the indigenous communities of Latin America, which are the rightful owners.
