To fight against climate change is to fight against poverty. For that reason, Alianza Española contra la Pobreza (Spanish Alliance against Poverty), of which Ecologistas en Acción belongs to, made the fight against climate change their own.

The environmental deterioration that the planet suffers and, in particular, the climate change have become one of the main causes of poverty. According to the United Nations there are almost the same number of people displaced for climate reasons (almost 25 million) than the sum of people persecuted for political, ethnic and religious reasons.

Besides, there are tremendously negative previsions, since Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicts that if the planet's temperature increases more than 2ºC (36ºF), there will be more than 7 million people threatened by coast floods in Asia, or around 500 million more people in America who will suffer from hydric stress.

This way, to fight against climate change is to fight against poverty. Furthermore, the fight against climate change is implicit in the Millennium Development Goals, in particular the number 7. For this reason, Alianza Española contra la Pobreza made the fight against climate change its own fight.

The year 2009 is a fundamental year in the fight against climate change, since the COP15 United Nations Climate Change Conference Copenhagen will take place on December. In this meeting new agreements on emissions reduction have to be reached. These agreements have to go much further than those reached on the Kyoto Protocol.

This agreement has to consider, at least, the following aspect:

- Adoption of a mandatory schedule of reductions in accordance with the conclusions of the Forth Assessment Report of the UN Scientists Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This reduction will have to fall back essentially on the countries that are the main responsible of global warming from a point of view of climate justice.

- Reductions will be carried out by means of internal measures in these countries and on the activities of their foreign multinationals. These measures will be fundamental changes to energy, food and movement policies.

- In addition, the budgetary provisions needed to make it viable have to be implemented. World Governments must not hide behind the fund shortage, caused by the crisis and the huge aids provided to the financial sector, to not take real and effective measures against climate change.

- To make it possible it is essential for the civil society to mobilise during this year, to press to achieve this agreement. For this reason, Alianza Española contra la Pobreza calls for the demonstrations that are being organised in the whole country around the Earth Day (April 22) that will have the fight against climate change as cornerstone.
