In view of the next presentation of the Agenda of the Spanish EU Presidency, in the first semester of 2010, which will coincide with the end of the term to halt biodiversity loss by 2010 that the Heads of Government of the EU had agreed in 2001; Ecologistas en Acción demands the Spanish Prime Minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, to show its commitment to preserve the biodiversity loss incorporating it as a high-priority matter on its Agenda and adopting the necessary measures.

All the Heads of Government of the European Union committed themselves in June 2001, in the European Council of Gothenburg, to halt the biodiversity loss before 2010. Even if this goal was included in the Sixth Environmental Action Program, it is unlikely that the EU will fulfil the objective to halt the biodiversity loss from now until 2010, as the European Commission has recognized in the first global evaluation about the advances realized in the application of the new Nature and Biodiversity strand.

For this reason, Ecologistas en Acción has sent a letter to the Prime Minister claiming that the Spanish EU Presidency Agenda, which will be developed during the first semester of 2010, should consider the biodiversity loss as a high-priority matter. Ecologistas en Acción has requested to carry out a deep analysis of the level of fulfilment of the objective established in the Council of Gothenburg during the Spanish Presidency, and to adopt a new objective, with effective and specific measures, to achieve to halt the biodiversity loss before 2015. In order to start up these initiatives during the Spanish Presidency, it should be hold a European Biodiversity Summit with the participation of the Heads of the Government, to assure that the binding decisions are adopted.

In addition, Spain, Belgium and Hungary are drawing up together the same guidelines for the three consecutive presidencies, so Ecologistas en Acción has requested the Spanish Prime Minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, to take into account the halt of biodiversity loss, as one of the shared objectives of the three presidencies.

Ecologistas en Acción hopes that the Spanish Prime Minister will lead the conservation of the biodiversity in the EU during the Spanish Presidency, as well as they hope for a change of tendency of the European policies to allow halting the loss of biodiversity, once for all.
